Leaf by Leaf
One of our favorite vegetables to grow is Salad Greens and we’ve been offering various leaves since this all started way back in 1995. Now, almost 30 years later, Anita continues growing salad greens with the help of daughters Lucy, Susannah and Laura.
We’ve learned a lot since the first seeds were germinated so long ago. We’ve discovered we like to grow (and eat!) mature greens – not baby leaves. We like the flavor, texture and especially the longevity both in the field and in the refrigerator. Folks are missing out on extraordinary flavors and textures by limiting themselves to store bought baby greens. They just don’t offer the incredible flavor of BBF leaves.
And, no machines here. Every salad green is harvested leaf by leaf completely by hand. We’ve always harvested this way and the thought of our greens being “abused” by a more aggressive harvest method makes us cringe. Harvesting by hand prevents bruising and that helps the greens last a long time. And, it works! Our customers are always amazed at how well our greens last. You can thank store bought for that because those sad little leaves can’t last three days in the fridge creating the misconception salad greens don’t hold up well. Not true.
Even after almost 3 decades of growing salad greens, a perfect bed of lettuces and greens is still so exciting. We’re still experimenting with new leaves and our latest addition is a gorgeous deep red Napa leaf that is striking in a salad. So fun! I don’t believe we’ll ever get tired of growing our favorite vegetable.
